Currently one of the most recognizable queer musicians, girl in red has become a role model and cult favorite for many lesbian and bi individuals. The phrase, “Do you listen to girl in red?” is now a discreet way of identifying other members of the women-loving-women community.

Girl in red is the stage name of Norwegian singer-songwriter Marie Ulven Ringheim. First making an outbreak on the music scene with her hit song, “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend”

In 2017, Ulven’s music falls within the indie, bedroom pop genre and embeds messages about romance, sexuality and mental health. Many of girl in red’s fans find her blunt lyrics and honest messages refreshing, as they fully encapsulate Ulven’s encouragement to “Be gay and loud!”

Ulven’s top tracks on Spotify include “we fell in love in october,” “girls,” “bad idea!” and “rue.”
