Senior captains serve up leadership

In high school tennis, success isn’t just about powerful serves and precise volleys, it’s about teamwork, strategy and leadership according to senior captain Alexa Gilbert. From running warm-ups to offering motivation during tough matches, the captains play a role in shaping the team’s success.

“As captain, I try to be a leader both on and off the court,” Gilbert said. “I also try to set a good example by always giving my best effort and keeping a positive attitude, even when things don’t go our way.”

Beyond their leadership responsibilities Gilbert believes captains also serve as role models, demonstrating the discipline and perseverance needed to excel in both sports and academics. For many players, the lessons learned on the court extend far beyond tennis.

“Tennis has taught me so much about discipline, time management and perseverance,” Gilbert said. “Balancing school, practice and matches has helped me stay organized and prioritize my responsibilities. It’s also been a great stress reliever—no matter how busy or overwhelming school gets, I know I can step on the court and just focus on the game.”

Senior co-captain Asvita Bonthogorla echoed this sentiment with her efforts towards her teammates. With playing on the team for three years, she has prior experience with the game and the dynamics between players.

“I help run warm-ups, motivate my teammates and make sure everyone stays focused during practices and matches,” Bonthogorla said. “Whether it’s hyping up my teammates before a big match or checking in on them after a tough loss, I try to be someone they can count on for support and leadership.”

While the captains lead from the front, the team also utilizes senior Himagnya Elaprolu, the team manager and a former player. Having played in previous seasons, Elaprolu understands the demands of the sport and works to ensure the team functions smoothly.

“I handle a lot of behind-the-scenes work to help the team succeed,” Elaprolu said. “I assist with organizing equipment, keeping track of match schedules and making sure everyone has what they need for practices and games.”

Compared to their season last year of 6 losses and 0 wins, the team is already doing better with a 2-2 record. One of their biggest feats, according to Elaprolu, was their 9-0 win against Centreville High School on April 8.

“We support each other more, communicate better on and off the courts and have become more confident in our abilities,” Bonthogorla said.

The team won their first scrimmage against Lake Braddock Secondary School with a score of 5-4 and holds a current record of 2-2. Their next match is on May 5 at home against Westfield High School.

“I love being a captain, it’s a big responsibility, but also really rewarding,” Gilbert said. “Getting to lead a team that I care so much about and seeing everyone improve and support each other is amazing.”
