Whether sports balls are being thrown, kicked or spiked, there’s no doubt of the intersection of sports and physics. Physics teacher Dennis Leahy contributes to this connection through his hobby of and love for various sports, including football, basketball and baseball.
“I enjoy playing them,” Leahy said. “I’m not very good, but I enjoy playing them. The last thing I did was the student-teacher basketball game last year [at West Springfield HS].”
Despite not having been on a team in years, Leahy actively participates in his hobby in other ways and shares it with his family. He’s previously coached his kids on a flag football team. By being a player, coach and fan, Leahy shows the different means of involvement in sports.
“I’ve been to baseball games, basketball games, football games and hockey games,” Leahy said.
His favorite sports teams vary from college-level to professional leagues, including his alma mater’s basketball team, the St. Joseph’s Hawks, as well as the Philadelphia Phillies, the Major League Baseball team of the city where he taught math at the beginning of his teaching career. Leahy also has interest in CHS sports and games.
“I’ve been to them in the past,” said Leahy. “I’ll go this year.”
